Overview

Released on CD by Montpellier in January 2008, The Song Is You is a 23-track archive of rare Billy Butterfield material dating from 1956 and 1957. Recorded at five different sessions that took place between December 5, 1956, and August 15, 1957, and subsequently issued on RCA Victor LPs with titles like They're Playing Our Song and Thank You for a Lovely Evening, this accessible and romantic mood music is performed by seasoned jazzmen. Butterfield's warmly expressive trumpet mingles nicely with that of Doc Severinsen, trombonists Lou McGarity, Urbie Green, and Cutty Cutshall; bassist Bob Haggart; and reedmen Hank D'Amico, Boomie Richman, Toots Mondello, Peanuts Hucko, Nick Caiazza, and Danny Bank. Mostly instrumental with a few friendly vocals tossed off by an unidentified female singer, this is perfect background music for slicing limes and pouring mineral water into crystal glasses.
