Great for everyone!

With easy-to-follow examples and revealing insight, Rikky Rooksby has culled together everything you need to start writing better songs right now. The Songwriting Sourcebook is the perfect gift for the aspiring and working songwriter alike.

Highlights of this book include: simple explanations of chord progressions and the different ways they affect the listener; ready-made examples that easily lend inspiration; chord charts at the bottom of each page to easily play the examples yourself; arrangement suggestions to spice up boring, repetitive song slumps; and 20 example songs on CD, along with in-depth discussions as to what is happening in each song and the feeling each arrangement envokes. The CD examples alone are worth the $22.95 MSRP.

There are a couple points of contention I have, but they're mostly superficial. First of all, the book needs some additional proofing before it's reprinted, as spelling and grammar mistakes persist, especially in the earlier sections of the book. It's not enough to detract from the content, so it's easily forgivable (we musicians never claimed to be English experts). And while Mr. Rooksby has been kind to put charts of the chords used in his book examples at the bottom of each page, some chords are conspicuously missing, an oversight that's easily corrected by cracking open a guitar chord book.

This is the first Rikky Rooksby book I've ever read, and I can honestly say I'm impressed. I definitely recommend this book to songwriters abroad and look forward to reading more from the author.
