The Sorcerer's Secretary
A romantic, mystery thriller...complete with gods of death!
Verity was cursed, and it wasn't just her embarrassing name. It was a real curse, even if no one ever believed her, for she had that long ugly scar - plus a terrifying history to prove it. Anything good in her life had been lost to her, her parents, her academic aspirations in physics, even her will to live. So now she drifted, doing odd jobs, clerical work, and immersed herself in historic romance novels, but that was until she saw him, a perfect Heathcliff or Mr. Darcy if there ever was one, save for a single flaw: Alexander Smyth-Williams was much grumpier and refused to act like a secret fantasy. He'd hired her, unexpectantly, to be his secretary, and then proceeded to have her do very little while he hid away in his office. But she had no complaints and many fears, knowing that, given her curse, it would all fall apart inevitably. Besides, she knew someone like him would never ever think of her as anything but a dowdy secretary, a drab young woman old before her time.
And after a few weeks, the inevitable did happen, but not in the way she'd expected. Alex was arrested for murder, and not just regular murder, but the grisly torture and murder of a rich, old man, a man who had threatened Alex for some unknown reason. That idea, she couldn't stomach. Alex couldn't be such a monster, and she had to prove his innocence, if only to prove to herself that she hadn't been wrong about him.
But in her pursuit of the truth, Verity had to leave her fantasies behind and embrace instead her natural intelligence and solid belief in physics. Rationality was needed here, for nothing else made sense anymore! In her quest to free Alex and solve a string of grisly murders, she wasn't expecting a rich, handsome playboy wanting to marry her, shadows trying to grab her, demonic omens straight from Hell, ghostly people who were actually real live sorcerers, and a flurry of shinigami death spirts, one of whom was apparently related to Alex and flirted with her with a happy abandon that seemed to drive Alex crazy.
Frankly, it wasn't the kind of secretarial job that she had imagined at all!
