"When I look back at my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. I had a wealthy and protected childhood the first 14 years of my life. Then I suddenly faced five years of fighting to stay alive in Japanese concentration camps followed by repatriation to Holland and immigration to the US.

So begins this luminous memoir, a gripping story of a young boy and his father struggling to survive disease, hunger and torture in wartime concentration camps. The boy's vivid childhood experiences and his unique relationship with his God loving friend Aaron, are not only heart wrenching, but also raise important questions about how human beings behave and treat each other in times of political conflict and peril.

    OUTSTANDING

A true story of a Dutch family , their life, before World War II, their separation, toture and imprisonment, and how they finally realized that they all survived.
    A truly remarkable story.
