The Soul of a Genius

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Campbell
The Soul of a Genius: 1949-1954 highlights early Ray Charles' sessions waxed for Swingtime, Downbeat, and Atlantic from that five-year period in his career. The disc starts with the Maxin Trio, finding Charles in pop crooner mode, and his first sessions featuring a horn section. The package wraps up with a 14-track sampling of his earliest Atlantic material including "It Should Have Been Me," "Mess Around," "Greenbacks" and "I've Got a Woman." Bud Music also included an enhanced CD-Rom section containing a biography, discography, jazz timeline, and catalog. A nice added touch, but nothing extraordinary.
