Editorial Reviews

Stacy Distel Nishioka
Author Suzanne Nelson has created a light-hearted but surprisingly moving tale that proves to be a quick and light read. We first meet Siena Bernstein, self-proclaimed freespirited Californian, on her way to Munich, Germany. She is about to begin a semester abroad in the city of her ancestors. While our protagonist may be a bit flighty and carefree, this is not your typical spring break trip; Siena has a secret plan. She is determined to complete her deceased father's "Carpe Diem" list. Her only link to her father is this list, and the last item has yet to be fulfilled. Only in Germany can she complete this list and possibly find a link to her past, her future, and the father she has never known. This young adult novel is an easy read and, just like Siena, is sunny and fun. She is an interesting character, and readers will appreciate her kindness, her friendships, and her adventure. A no-frills read for young adults (girls) with a Meg Cabot-like feel.
School Library Journal
Gr 6-10-Siena's deceased father was an East German refugee. When the free-spirited 17-year-old American has a chance to study in Munich, she embraces the opportunity to try to do what he wanted to do himself: locate and thank the man responsible for his freedom. The task proves harder than she thought when his very common name, a demanding course load, a relationship with a "Eurohottie" resident adviser, and a considerable language barrier threaten to impede her progress. Yet, with two new friends to keep her in check, Siena's faith in good karma finally pays off, and she meets her objective. Emotion-filled trips to Dachau and the Berlin Wall help her understand that "some things are worth taking a chance for" (e.g., liberty, morality, and justice). Siena makes lasting friendships, enjoys a little romance, and finds a missing part of herself. With likable characters and a plot that is as straightforward as it is swift, this installment will please fans of the series.-Erin Senig-Schirota, Bronxville Public Library, NY Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    best S.A.S.S. so far

The Sound of Munich was a very inspiring book. It was touching to me how one girl can be so determined to live her father's dream of thanking the man that helped them across the berlin wall. In the process, she meets new friends and discovers her german family's past. Though her Dad has died she is determined to make him happy, from wherever else he is. With some drama romance and adventure stuffed in between, this book is in my opinion the best S.A.S.S. book so far. The only part of this book that I had a problem with was the slow beginning then fast middle and end. It seemed like the beginning would never end, it probably went on for like 50 pages, then once it got to the middle and end, the best parts, it's like the author went into fast forward mode, even though some of the parts could have really used some better explanation and detail. If the middle and end were streched out some more, I believe that this book could definately be a very popular book with teens who don't like reading much, seeing as though it is shorter and has some culture and fun in it.

    Great

When I read the book, it was absolutely wonderful. My mom is 100% German so it fun to read about her culture. However, when I asked her about some of the German phrases in the book, she said that they were incorrect. The story though, I think I could read it 1,000 times and would still love it. I recommend this book to everyone who looks at this review. :)
