All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The soundtrack to the Carrie Underwood-starring live 2013 presentation of The Sound of Music is absent the one quality that made the televised musical so interesting: it is not recorded live; it was cut in the studio. This may make it not as kinetic or as exciting as the broadcast but the precision of the studio reveals how the cast -- led by Underwood but also featuring Audra McDonald, Stephen Moyer, Ariane Rinehart, and Jessica Molaskey -- are throwing themselves into their roles. In turn, the arrangements are faithful to either the original Broadway production or, most often, the 1965 film -- which is appropriate, as reinvention isn't the purpose of a production like this. This 2013 staging is a nostalgic celebration of one of the most beloved 20th century musicals and it does right by its source material.
From the Publisher
From executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Smash, Hairspray, Chicago) comes the most highly anticipated television event of the year: The Sound of Music Live. Country music superstar, Carrie Underwood, stars in her acting debut as Maria with Stephen Moyer (True Blood) as Captain von Trapp in the classic rodgers and Hammerstein musical which will be broadcast nationwide on NBC in a three-hour live broadcast on december 5, 2013. The Sound of Music album is the companion piece to this sure-to-be-spectacular event and is a studio recording that includes all of the musical numbers that will appear in the live broadcast.

One of the most popular stage and film musicals of all time, The Sound of Music is based on the true story of a young novice nun who falls in love with Captain von Trapp and his seven children set against the backdrop of nazi-occupied austria. The biggest jewel in the rodgers and Hammerstein crown, The Sound of Music contains some of the most famous songs ever written: “The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things,” “do-re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “Climb ev’ry Mountain” and “Edelweiss.”

Accompanying Underwood and Moyer are Tony award ®-winning TV stars Audra Mcdonald (Private Practice, Porgy & Bess, ragtime), Laura Benanti (Go On, Royal Pains, Gypsy) and Christian Borle (Smash, Peter & the Starcatchers, Thoroughly Modern Millie). Five-time Tony®-winner Mcdonald will portray Mother Abbess, with Benanti as Elsa Schrader and Borle as Max Dettweiler. The Sound of Music will be a faithful adaptation of the original stage musical and is destined to become a beloved holiday special for years to come. So get ready, both novices and fans of The Sound of Music alike, to experience the most joyful, most emotional and most musical family adventure of them all.

I enjoyed it. I thought the musical could have had a bit more Carrie Underwood in it more with the singing. They could have re-done "Climb Every Mountain" a bit better. Otherwise both the DVD and CD of it are exceptionally good and the vocalists and actors were all amazing.
