Editorial Reviews

Booknews
This short history of modern Russia begins with an overview of the historical background that shaped Russia as it entered the 20th century. Kort (social science, Boston U.) then focuses on the pivotal events that led in turn to the establishment of the Bolshevik dictatorship, Stalinist totalitarianism, the reforms and counter- reforms of Krushchev and Brezhnev, and the dramatic changes during the Gorbachev years, culminating in the collapse of the Soviet system. The final section considers the first decade of post-Soviet Russia, including the loss of empire, the attempt to create a Russian-style capitalist democracy, and the legacy of Boris Yeltsin's presidency. Clear, To The Point

History on any country can be really dull and confusing (especially when some authors like to use fancy language that normal people don't use - especially the "like" generation of young people who are required to read such books for courses in college) but Michael Kort does a GREAT job of covering Russian history and keeping it to the point, clear, concise, and does not pepper his book with complex sentences that require a 2nd or 3rd reading before moving on. If you're looking for a "dummy" book on Russia, this is a great one. Not to say that he's a "dummy" writer, but he writes for the college-student audience, which is great to have for once!
