The "Cornerstones of Freedom" series claims to "bring history to life" and that "studying history can be fun." Unfortunately, this book does little to bring the space race to life or to make learning about it interesting. Benoit attempts to provide an historical overview of the race between the United States and Soviet Union to explore space, but the book is basically an outline of names and dates, facts and figures. Benoit tries to cover too much history in too few pages and does not do enough to relate the concepts to the knowledge and experience of his target audience. The book ends with a map (which seems to me to be a waste of two pages), a quick list of influential individuals, a timeline, and a glossary. Although the book includes several pictures throughout, they do little to pique the interest of the reader. A child is likely to find this book boring.
