Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Previously seen in One Winter's Day and One Snowy Night, Little Hedgehog looks after his baby cousin, at his mother's request, in this fair-weather outing. Little Hedgehog takes Baby Hedgehog—who carries a red blankie with a velveteen texture—to hunt for bluebells in the airy green fields. The blanket is the cause of some unexpected commotion, but in the end, it saves the day. Though readers might wish for more resolution (Little Hedgehog's mother never reappears) the lighthearted conundrums are engaging. Ages 2-6. (Apr.)

PreS—Little Hedgehog is babysitting his cousin, Baby Hedgehog. With friends Badger, Fox, and Mouse, they head for Wild Flower Woods to hunt for bluebells and have a picnic. Along the way, Baby loses his bright red, fuzzy blanket. Mouse finds it, but it soon flies off in a gust of wind. When the blanket floats to the ground, Baby Hedgehog gets wrapped up in it and bounces down a hill. The animals give chase, and the bundle finally stops amid a bunch of primroses—in Wild Flower Woods. There, the friends come upon a mouse that falls down a steep hole. With Baby's red, fuzzy blanket, they come to the rescue, and the story ends with all the animals sitting down for their "special picnic in a field of bluebells." This very quiet adventure has softly painted, soothing illustrations and a flocked blankie, which will be attractive to preschoolers.—Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH
