Gathering Storms
PART SIX:
I looked out the back window, and saw a white van behind us. My stormy gray eyes widened as I recognized the driver, and their passenger.
Two tall, probally full-grown men, wearing black cloaks and black masks, with a crossbow slung over their shoulders.
"Step on it, Val!" I ordered. My brother's car lurched forward, nearly running over one of those new minicars in the process. The white van disapeared as Val screeched down another road, quickly turning into the parking lot for the movie theater. I frowned, as I hadn't realized we'd arrived this early.
Val parked beside a nearly identical car, and quickly hopped out. I was only a heartbeat behind him, but Jenna was still inside, looking shaken.
"Come ON, Jenna!" I hissed under my breath.
She got out of the car, her phone still in hand, and Val and I lunged forward, grabbed her by either arm, and marched up towards the theater.
"Three tickets to see Enders," I said breathlessly to a black-haired woman at the counter.
"I wanted to see Golden Fire," Val hissed in my ear, but I ignored him, whipped the needed money from my pocket and handing it to the lady. She nodded, giving us an odd look, and handed me the tickets.
"Only to be expected," I thought as Val and I dragged Jenna into the theater. "A brother and sister, both in a rush, dragging another, demanding their tickets, and marching past without another word. And she might have even noticed my knife!" Without thinking, I fingered the elegant purple handle with my free hand.
"Popcorn?" I asked Val, who said quickly, "I'll pay." The previous events of today must have changed his thoughts as well. Who knew any of this would happen?"
After we'd bought the popcorn, we headed into theater 7, and quickly found seats. It was odd, seeing as there were hardly any taken seats, when Enders was such a popular movie and in was the middle of summer. I was slightly worried, and choose seats next to a group of teen boys, so that any followers might mistake us for part of their group.
"Hey," the boy next to me said, flashing a dashing smile. I could barely see him, as it was dark.
"Hey," I repeated, quickly looking away.
"What's your name?"
"Susan."
"I'm Jay."
"Cool."
"You got a boyfriend?"
"Oh, shutup."
Previews began to rattle off upon the screen. The final previews, one for Golden Fire, showed up. When it came to a scene where the two lead characters were kissing, Jay nudged me, and I quickly shoved him away.
I saw a beam of light out of the corner of one eye, and froze as a couple came in. After a moment, I relaxed as I realized it wasn't our followers, but a pair of giggling girls. They walked up, and sat on the other side of the teenage boy group, laughing and batting their long eyelashes in the darkness. Jay turned from me to the new arrivals.
The movie began to start, and I reclined into my chair. Val passed the popcorn, and I grabbed a handful. Everything seemed fine and normal, but I knew it wasn't. Things were getting worse by the minute... and they'd probally keep getting worse, untill I got to the bottom of this.
I could only sit and wait for Monday to come. Then, mabye I could make some sense of this mess.
