Editorial Reviews

Judy Randle
A true story of what happened in their lives after receiving a deadly diagnosis. It is an honest, open sharing of the strains placed on every member of their family. They offer no easy answers, but the book is infused with a spirit of overcoming the odds, one day at a time.

It is the road we must all travel, in our own way. The Detrichs have given us an inspirational story on that journey.

I love the spirit of Lo

I hope Terry come's out with the second book soon! Lo has gone through two lung transplants so far. The first one got rejected. The second one is doing great so far. I remember the day she got the second one, and they say prayer doesn't work. Well is sure did here. She was in a drug induced coma in the hospital, and I prayed and God answered my prayer two hours before I even asked. God told me the lungs were on the way to the hospital as we speak. Weird you say but oh how I believe now! The second book is about the transplants she got.

A 16 year old with Cystic Fibrosis

I was given this book by my social worker here in the CF clinic. Actually I was born a few years after Lo was and my parents and family felt the exact same way as this family. It is real, which makes it so awesome. The hospitalizations, everything. I would recommend this book to anyone that knows a loved one with CF, a patient with CF (So you know you arent alone),or just flat out anyone. Long live CF patients!

A window into the world of CF

So many things in your book made me want to shout 'THAT'S IT!' The smell of the formula, the loose stools before the enzymes kicked in, the entire shelf in the kitchen filled with her medicines, the astronomical medical bills, the exhaustion, the depression, the frustration. No one understands except the parent of a chronically ill child what it is really like. Your book does a wonderful job of giving others a glimpse of what our lives are like. I plan to get copies for all my sisters to read. Thank you for taking the time to put it together. I plan to keep you all in my prayers.

The Spirit of Lo is the spirit of every CF family!

Terry and Don's story of their family's journey down the CF path was all too familiar to me, and I felt, more than once, that I was reading my own story! Lo's spirit mirrors the spirit of my own family and the book had deep meaning for all of us. This is a tale that should be read by EVERY parent of a chronically ill child and by EVERY healthcare provider working with chronically ill children. It's a perspective that must be seen and understood. Thanks you, Terry and Don, for speaking for all of us!

Lo's Story Will Always Be With Me

I cried my tears as I read your story. I am still in awe over the ability of the human spirit in adversity. Lo and her family have touched thousands of hearts thru their lives and thru their book, no doubt inspiring countless others to stretch themselves to do something they fear is impossible, or to forge ahead when life seems like "too much to handle". Now, when I catch myself complaining about anything at all, I remember the Deitrichs, and the fact that Lo has to "fight" for every breath she takes. I humbly shift into gratitude for my life and my health, and I send loving thoughts to this and other CF families, and pray that my strength may be equal to theirs if I am ever faced with seemingly insurmountable odds, odds that they live with every single day. Thank you for opening your lives to others.

    A Must Read Book!

I strongly recommend this book to anyone. Whether or not you have a family member or friend with a terminal illness, this book will touch your heart. A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Terry, Don and Lo. They are an amazing family! When they told me about their book, I couldn't wait to get a copy and read it. It took me two days; I couldn't put it down. Our daughter was diagnosed with CF at 9 weeks of age so I could relate to many parts of the book. This book has inspired me to never give up on fighting for this disease and for those who suffer from it. Many thanks to the Detrichs!!

Sharing in 'The Spirit of Lo'

I loved this book! As an adult with CF, there are things about my parents¿ and sister¿s life and love that I have taken for granted. This book very lovingly opened my eyes to what my life has been like for them. I would recommend this book to anyone who cares about me - my husband's family, my parents, my sister, my mentor, my friends, my psychologist, and any new CF families. I think this book is an invaluable asset to those in our ranks and those who join us daily. One of the biggest encouragements is that Lo is still here. I have read many inspirational tributes to people who are gone. It lifts my spirit to know that Lo is still on her journey. Thank you for your reflection, insight, love, commitment and talent. Many people will be helped and encouraged by your words.

I laughed. I cried. I reflected on my own life.

Sometimes it seems so unusual to hear about anyone rejoicing about all that life has to offer, let alone a family with a burden such as cystic fibrosis. I've read it more than once and each time I take away something special¿ knowing that I have the choice to make the most of every minute my life has to offer. You can't help but love this book and this family and be inspired by them both!

I couldn't put this one down!

The Spirit of Lo is truly one of the most exceptional books I have ever read. I laughed; I cried-- again and again. This family's story of their daughter's everyday battle with an unimaginable illness will grip your heart in a way you have never felt. I read this book in one day. It was just impossible to put down. It really gave me a new perspective on life and how special each day is. Many thanks to the Detrich family for sharing their unforgetable story.

    A Must Read!!!

I am recommending a very inspirational book. I asked for 'Spirit of Lo' by Terry & Don Detrich, for Christmas. This book was the only gift that I really wanted this year. I did get 'Spirit of Lo' and it was the best gift I could have been given. I read it in a matter of days because I could not put it down. I wanted more every time I came to the end of a chapter. 'Spirit of Lo' is well written and keeps you tuned in to find out what happens next. This book is about a little girl who has Cystic Fibrosis and you see through the eyes of Terry and Don what it is like to deal with a terminally ill child. It is inspirational, touching, and it educates about Cystic Fibrosis and everyday life. I believe that 'Spirit of Lo' should be read by anyone who has any kind of ties to a person who has an illness. This book is full of hope, compassion, love, personal struggles, humor, and above all it shows that people can make things happen, if the will is there. I have recommended 'Spirit of Lo' to more than 100 people so they will go out and buy this book because it is just that good. I am committed to recommend this book to everyone I know.Definitely a must buy!!!!!Sincerely,Jonathan Dailey

'The Spirit of Lo' makes you want to meet this incredible family

I was truly inspired by the honesty in this true story of a family dealing with their youngest daughter's devastating illness - Cystic Fibrosis. This book would provide good inspirational reading for anyone, and is especially meaningful for those who are dealing with an ongoing family crisis. After I stayed up all night reading it, my husband got curious and picked it up. He read it all in one sitting himself!

    Motivational, and From the Heart

I read the spirit of Lo over a period of time with every ounce of free time that I had. With emotions I had never experienced while reading this amazing book, I learned to appreciate the way of life with Cystic Fibrosis patients and their families. This book is uplifting to the mind, body, and soul. I recommend this book to everyone. Read this book and see how it will change your outlook on life and to appreciate the things we were meant to have.

    Up-Lifting, Inspiring and Awesome

As a parent of a child with CF, this book was comforting to my situation. I personally could relate to different events in the book. I also feel it could be educating to anyone who reads this book without any connection to CF.

A True Heroine of Our Time

This is the 'Frank DeFord story of the new millenium.' The Dietrich family is a beautiful one and you will enjoy getting to know them in their story. Theirs is a life in progress (no sad ending here). If you have a family member with with CF, you will see yourself, your child(ren), your spouse, your loved ones throughout this book as you read about a normal family living their life, coping with their daughter's CF. If CF is not part of your life, this story will captivate your heart as you learn what it is like to live life growing up with cystic fibrosis.

Spirit of Lo: An Ordinary Family's Extraordinary Journey

The book goes beyond the science and economics of cystic fibrosis to bring to light the poignant challenges facing CF families every day. I was deeply touched by Lo's strength and the family's strength in weathering pain, fear and frustration as they opened their hearts to faith, hope, and love. The book is a gift to all who work toward a cure.

Spirit of Lo: An Ordinary Family's Extraordinary Journey

The Spirit of Lo is a book that will stay with you always, like those we read several times which speak to us in different ways during different times. It has a wonderfully inspiring message. A 'must read' for CF families and friends

The authors share the struggles behind the scenes. They talk about the things that are never brought up at a doctors visit but have so much influence on the family. An easy to read book to be shared with family and friends of anyone with a chronic illness.
