Overview

Although Reiki has no official or traditional music, some practitioners of this energy healing art have created music suitable for use in a healing session. The music shouldn't "lead" the mood of the client in any particular way, yet at the same time, it should have enough direction and substance to foster the process of emotional and physical healing. Guna Sangah's four 15-minute pieces, all based on a similar theme, seem to fit the bill well. Each proceeds with the delicate cadence of a lullaby. Synth strings provide a background cushion of comfort, while koto, harp, guitar, kalimba (thumb piano), vibraphone, flute, and violin move the melody. Sangah offers just enough dynamic tension and rhythmic syncopations to churn some inner feelings, while the surf sounds on "Ascent of the Spirit" can help wash away tension. A gentle bell sounds every three minutes to alert the practitioner to change hand positions. This lovely album should work well for massages, as an accompaniment to meditation, or simply as a relaxing background.
