You have to keep reminding yourself that 2001 newcomer Michelle Branch is only 17 years old when listening to her worthy pop
ock debut The Spirit Room. The 11-track set showcases this precocious artist on guitar electric and acoustic and a substantial vocal presence that blends innocence, passion, vulnerability, yearning, intensity, and tenderness all in one voice. She also has a knack for crafting melodic vocal leads, which further define her infectious sound. All Music Guide - Liana Jonas
However, what truly shines through are the young musician's lyrics -- she handles much of the songwriting -- which are some of the most open, simple, and idealistic ruminations on love to drop in 2001. It's no surprise that the disc's first single release, the lively and heartfelt "Everywhere" -- with its electric-guitar power chords, spirited vocal delivery, and catchy chorus -- spread like wildfire on the radio. Elsewhere, the sugary mid-tempo rock ballad "You Get Me" is an endearing and clever spin on the romantic pairing of two misfits. There's nothing more fulfilling and powerful than having the unconditional understanding, acceptance, and love of another, particularly for those a bit "left of center," as the song explains, and Branch well captures the essence of this life treasure. The album's most captivating moment is the mesmerizing "Drop in the Ocean," which, to be sure, symbolizes Branch's Spirit Room. On it her voice, backed by slow and building synth chords, departs from its usual energetic sound and becomes throaty, deep, and ethereal. And Branch's lyrics -- "Love took me by the hand/love took me by surprise/love led me to you/and love opened up my eyes/I was drifting away like a drop in the ocean, now I realize/that nothing has been as beautiful as when I saw heaven's skies/in your eyes" -- take the musical depiction of love to a spiritual level, and that doesn't happen often in contemporary pop
ock, particularly not by a 17 year old. Of note is producer John Shanks' Stevie Nicks, Melissa Etheridge, and BBMak, among others great mix; textured backing vocals and overdubs, and a creative use of drum machines, modern beat sounds, and turntables set to a backdrop of rock music, puts a fresh spin on the genre. No doubt, Branch is an artist with a bright future, and that's lucky for music listeners. She has enough spirit to fill not just one room, but many.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Songs

Most of the songs on this CD are completely addictive. I've been listening to them on repeat since I got the CD. While some of the songs are a little slow for my taste I love: Everywhere, All He Wanted, You Get Me, Sweet Misery and If Only She Knew and Here With Me and I'd Rather Be in Love are good (though not as good as the others I listed). I also really like Breathe from her other CD Hotel Paper.

    Spirit Room

Michelle Branch is amazing and my all-time favorite singer. Her lyrics aren't like those "I'm so perfect-ish" junk you here nowadays. I loved all the songs on this cd (not including Drop in the Ocean). I love it sooooooooooooo much that it hasn't left my playlist since I bought it.

    Spirit Room

Michelle Branch is very talented, and can actully sing, unlike some other singing stars i could mention. Michelle's music makes me feel something more then when I listen to your everyday, lip-synching pop wannabe. She acutally writes songs her own songs (unlike some singers who have other people write it for them) and (you can just tell) is a very caring, sensative person. She rocks, and she always will!

    Great CD

It's so cool how Michelle writes her own music. I totally respect that! 1 or 2 of the songs were kind of boring, though

    The Spirit Room!

I really like this whole C.D.! I don't own it but I still love it and wish I owned it! Michelle Branch is definately a great singer and she isn't fake or involved in all those bad things that fake people like Britney Spears and J.Lo are involved in. In other words, she is a great person too! Well I hope you enjoyed reading and if you haven't listened to her music, you should!

Oh well. n this cd, my fave songs are Everywhere,You Get Me,All You Wanted,You Set Me Free,Something To Sleep To,Here With Me,Sweet Misery,If nly She Knew,Id Rather Be In Love, and Drop In the cean.

    A must-hear and must-have

Michelle's lyrics are filled with honesty that it even hit me straight in the heart. Having bought her CD "The Spirit Room" inspired me and also my songwriting skills.. I've been writing songs with much more honesty than usual...she deserves a lot of appreciation! Plus! she influenced me in also learning the guitar...so I guess, she's a very big inspiration...she taught me how to sing, play and write just how I feel.

Michelle Branch= a bud of a beautiful flower

Michelle Branch is very talented and mature. She knows who she is and doesn't try to change that. I respect her for that because not many musicians her age, or any age, are comfortable with it. Michelle is honest (does not claim credit for songs she did not fully write) and a great guitarist. She is not a vocalist who pretends to be able to play an instrument, she is a true musician. Although her music is very pop-oriented, I guess it's just me, I'd give her a 4/5.

Good even if you don't like pop much

Ok, I normally listen to gangsta rap, metal, thrash, and generally heavy stuff. But I still think this is a really great album, the tunes are good, the lyrics are simple yet powerful and will strike a nerve if you're in the right mood. "All you wanted" is definately my favourite and the rest of the album is pretty damned good as well.

    What A Gal

She shines. She is sort of a combination of Jewel and Natalie Imbruglia, with a hint of Joan Osborne. That's a cozy mix.

    BEST CD OFTHIS YEAR

this cd is better then any other this year. with the 3 hit singels "all you wanted" good-bye to you" and "everywhere" this cd would make a great bithday present. in a world of britany's, and belly's that show, michelle proves that you don't have to bare your tummy to be liked. and unlike most cd's michelle doesn't have any "filler song." all of her lyrics, are thought out, and the melodies are always enjoyable. so if you love a cd with a girl who can really sing, write her own songs, and play guitar, i encourage you to buy this cd.

    Michelle's # 1 fan!

In a world of push-up bras, baring midriffs, and getting hair extensions is to be expected, Michelle Branch knows that that's not what it takes to become liked. What I like most about her is that she has her own style and doesn't go along with the rest of the fake pop diva's such as Britney and Christina. Her songs are about real life situations and are well coordinated. My personal favorites "All You Wanted" and "Everywhere" are meaningful and well sang.I've had this cd for almost a year and i play it everyday. It's one of those cd's that you just can't get tired of. It's my favorite cd ever. You rock Michelle! I can't wait until her next one comes out!
