Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Waage, a television producer, and Applestone, a journalist, inform readers about 350 spiritual sites and centers of New York City and its environs, including yoga studios, Buddhist and Kabbalah centers, and gay- and lesbian-friendly places of worship. Within each of the main sections-"Eastern Paths," "Western Paths," "Off the Beaten Path," and "Beyond"-the authors describe the main tenets of each religion or philosophy, from Hinduism and Islam to Theosophy and Wicca. In addition to listing the name, address, and telephone number of each organization, they describe the "flavor and feeling" of the place itself-the clientele, the style of the minister, rabbi, swami, or spiritual leader, and so on. Also included are a glossary; lists of festivals, web sites, and bookstores; and indexes by alphabet, region, and activity. A useful guide for both believers and those who wish to learn more about the subject, this is recommended for most public libraries, especially those in the New York City area.-George M. Jenks, Bucknell Univ., Lewisburg, PA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    All in one place

Having all of the information contained in this one book allows for much easier access to the varied spiritual facilities and activities of NYC. Friends from Eurpe have been especially happy with it, since they do not have the time when they visit to do the research themselves. This guide truly guides you through the multitude of choices.

    Informative Resource

I live in Boston, but I bought The Spiritual Guide to New York because of the chapter introductions. They give a really good, in depth overview of a variety of alternative spiritual paths in a style that is really easy to read. I haven't found any other book where you can find so much information in once source. I found that you do not need to live in New York to appreciate the resources listed and available - from websites to retreats you can easily imagine visiting. Both thorough and informative, the book is an incredibly accessible guide.

    Good for non-New Yorkers

I bought this book not for the guidebook part of it but because it is packed with information about various religions and spiritual pursuits--a great primer for the casually interested and a superb resource for those who are really serious about spirituality. Really a fun and educational read.
