Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greta Holt
Hubie and the other students in his grade are required to attend the spring dance, and horrors, the boys must dance with girls! Hubie's grumbling gets him assigned by Mom to Mrs. Tunny's dance class, where he specializes in being thrown about by Mrs. Tunny. The class is uncomfortable for Hubie but great fun for the reader. Thaler uses the character of Hubie to represent all elementary children who must face their first dance. Hubie is scared, enthusiastic, and tortured in turn. After dance class, he watches dancing on television, desperate to learn something. At school, he reads a library book about dancing and practices in the boys' bathroom mirror. Although frightened, Hubie is determined to become competent in dancing and to have a good time, if that possibility is within his reach. The day of the dance, Hubie arrives smelling good and trembling. It is he who walks into the no man's land between the boys and the girls and asks a girl to dance. After shaking and quaking, his legs do move in a box step pattern. He and the girl are dancing, and Hubie is a hero! Thaler creates the wacky world of youngsters trying to make sense of social situations. Lee's illustrations and asides contribute to the fast pace and fun read. "Black Lagoon Adventures" No. 15.
