PreS-Gr 2 --A storyteller's surefire crowd-pleaser reduced to a mediocre picture book offering about a grandmother who tries to help the small boy in her care overcome his fear and stay in bed. The distraught woman's solution of giving the boy an assortment of animals to sleep with results in an ever more raucous, if predictable, menagerie of scaredy cats who repeatedly dive under the bed sending up a collective wail. The proverbial last straw indeed causes the whole house to collapse. All ends happily in a new residence sans squeaks. The traditional cumulative folktale from Puerto Rico is retold in flat, unexciting language that sorely misses the repetitive phrases and colloquialisms that make the verbal version so appealing and memorable; even the sound effects become tiresome here. Wickstrom's lighthearted watercolors are not the least bit scary; with the exception of a telltale shadow or two, they have the sunny brightness of midday even when ``the room grew very dark.'' Even though Simms appends some key Spanish phrases to the narrative, neither the telling nor the illustrations capitalize on the story's ethnic roots or exotic locale. It may well be the squeaky wheel that gets the attention, but The Squeaky Door will slip by unnoticed.-- Luann Toth, School Library Journal
