The Stake Is Goldby Jinx Barnum
Mildred (Jinx) Thompson Barnum has lived in the beautiful Ozark mountains for the past sixty five years. "I wrote this story back in the days when my husband, "Doc" Barnum, was serving as a general Osteopathic physician in South Central Missouri, when Forestry Service pilots were doing multiple fly overs to find marijuana fields, iron ore was being mined nearby and the local police department consisted of one city marshal. Sometimes I imagine that I can still see a lonely derelict house high on a hill, friends floating down Jack's Fork river, the scarred round table in the back room of the pool hall, fishing rigs and square dances. Also I can remember tragedies to mirror the rapidly occurring changes of those days."
"There were, of course, no such murders. Doc and Cran and the others were never really there - all figments of my imagination - and the events I described in this book so far as I know never happened but in my mind, the story begged to be told. I see beauty, peace, challenge, eternity in these Ozark Mountains and perseverance, courage, humor and love amongst the people."
