Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Raina Sedore
Joey and Tank love visiting places that are haunted. In this fifth adventure of the "Ghostly Graphic Adventures" series, the boys travel to Star Island, a real place in the Atlantic Ocean off the coasts of New Hampshire and Maine. Joey wants to look for Blackbeard's treasure which is said to be hidden somewhere on the island. As they explore, the boys encounter a series of ghosts, some whom are friendly and some not so much. The illustrations for the story are in full color and use a variety of page layouts. The book includes a Table of Contents, which refers to an afterword describing the factual basis for the story as well as a glossary and a section called "Web Sites." When the reader turns to the Web Sites section, there is a short paragraph introducing the publisher's website, saying that there are additional links at that site which are monitored. Basing a ghost story on a real place and set of ghost stories is not a new idea—and the plot of this story is completely predictable to any fan of the genre. The two "heroes" are indistinguishable beyond their body types, and at the end of the story, the reader is left underwhelmed. This title screams contrivance and is not worth its high price.
