If the American patriot Dr. Baines hadn't had rowdy Redcoats jailed, he wouldn't have been arrested and put aboard a British ship for transport to trial and prosecution. But he did and he was, and thereby touched off-in 1814-the series of events that led Francis Scott Key to sail to and board the ship seeking his friend's release. For absorbing accounts of the incident that inspired our national anthem, turn to Deborah Kent's wealth of particulars about The Star-Spangled Banner. Ms. Kent writes of the circumstances that led to Baines's arrest, Key's penchant for poetry, the defense of Ft. McHenry and the verses brought about by its bombardment. The illustrations of archival photographs and prints include an 1873 photo of Ft. McHenry's flag, clearly missing the corner which was cut out to wrap the body of a soldier who died defending it.
