Overview

The Star Svensdotter trilogy is comprised of Dana Stabenow’s Second Star, A Handful of Stars, and Red Planet Run, collected here in a single volume along with the Martian short story, “No Place Like Home.”

Follow Esther “Star” Svensdotter from the construction of the Ellfive habitat through adventures in the asteroid belt and onward, to the ruddy fourth planet that seems mankind's inexorable destiny. Along the way she'll encounter Luddite terrorists, military tyrants, grifters, drifters, eugenicists, murderers, alien and artificial intelligences… all in the pursuit of a brighter future and broader horizons. It’s science fiction on a golden-age model, when we all dreamed of growing up to become astronauts and the greatest challenge to manned space exploration wasn't the budgetary oversight committee, but just finding someone with the right amount of gumption for the job. Star Svensdotter has gumption in spades.

    Another Kick-Ass Stabenow Chick...

I enjoyed reading the trilogy, although I think the first was the best of the lot. I love Stabenow's Kate Shugak character, and Star shares many of the same characteristics. The stories are an interesting take on the sci-fi genre, and the setting and background seem to be well-thought out. Stabenow also manages to work in her trademark Alaska references in a natural way, unlike the annoying habit she has of making really obvious and frequent classic sci fi references as if to say "See what I did there? I've read my Heinlein! (or fill-in-the-blank with another famous writer)."

I think these stories were some of her early writings, and it shows a bit in quality. Although I don't think they're as good as her Kate Shugak mystery novels, they're still a good way to spend a few hours of light reading.
