Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dianne Ochiltree
Once, on a starlit night, there was a baby who had no mother. Thus begins this gentle, poetic hardcover picture book. Alone in a field, she looks up at the stars and wonders if they would be her Mother—or maybe the moon, or the wind, or the trees? The baby cries out to all sorts of maternal possibilities, from natural forces to woodland creatures, but none answers her call until...it is heard by a woman, far away, who cannot smile because she has no child. And thus begins our story's happy ending: the childless woman immediately follows the baby's cry in the night, finding the little one who needs motherly love, and, as the morning sun dawns, carries her home in her arms. The prose is spare and lovely, albeit a bit sentimental and with more of an adult viewpoint than one of a child. The artwork is delicate, ephemeral and captures the magic of a starry summer night and the warm glow of the mother/child bond. This would be an excellent choice for a new baby or baby shower gift.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-On a starry night, this tale of sorrow turns to joy. A leaf-clad infant is lying in a meadow surrounded by rabbits, squirrels, and birds. The child cries out, "Stars, bright stars, can you love me? Will you be my mother?" When they do not reply, the baby asks the moon, the wind, the trees, a hill, a wolf, and a stream the same question. No one responds. A woman is gazing sadly out of a window when the wind carries the baby's cry to her heart. She runs out into the night, finds the child, and smiles. The pastel shades of the folk-art watercolors lighten the somber tone of this lyrical story. The illustrations are somewhat static although stars shine, leaves swirl, and small forest animals keep the baby company. This quiet story would be most appropriate to share one-on-one in adoptive families.-Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Shields offers a gentle little tale that can be read as an adoption story or one about the most basic kind of mother love. A baby in a garment of leaves cries, lying among the grasses and flowers, and calls to the stars, "can you love me? Will you be my mother?" But the stars don't answer. The babe inquires of the silver moon, of the west wind and the trees, and even of the stream and the wolf, beseeching each to hold or warm or protect, but each either refuses or ignores. A woman, who does not smile, "because she had no child," hears the baby's cry and is led from her vine-covered cottage by the moon, stream, wind and trees to find the babe and bring it home at the end of night. " 'I will be your mother, little one,' she said." The dulcet watercolors are painted in meltingly soft pastels and swooping lines without being overly sweet, though the whole will not appeal to every taste. (Picture book. 3-7)
