Children's Literature - Barbara Troisi
The 3rd edition "Cornerstones of Freedom" series invites young readers to become history investigators—examine the evidence, people and witnesses to bring history to life. This title details the efforts and process of French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi to successfully build the Statue of Liberty in the entrance to New York harbor on Bedloe's Island as symbol of lasting friendship and a tribute to liberty between France and the United States beginning in 1865. The author delves into all the issues related to design, structure, collecting donations, construction of the base locally and packaging pieces for shipping to America. "The Story Continues" (back matter) focuses on maintenance of the structure. Sidebars spotlight events of the times (newspaper headlines and articles), Firsthand Look (museum, other projects by the sculptor, exhibition, statue of liberty), Today's Perspective, and Photo Ops expand the procedures surrounding the statue's fascinating and easy-to-read story. Archival sketches and photography bring alive the times and events of the historic symbol. Other enrichment opportunities include maps of events, influential individuals, timelines, living history (online primary resources, books and web sites) and glossary. The easy-to-read narrative of this informational title is complemented with bold, bright captions and colorful highlights that will tempt readers and includes a table of contents and index. The map was limited to three sites and difficult to identify land and water masses. The history lesson offers excellent coverage of Lady Liberty's conception to dedication in 1886 and is a rich resource for students doing research assignments. Recommended resource to support social studies curriculum for grades 4 to 6. Reviewer: Barbara Troisi
