Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“A much needed book for young teens who are living through family upheaval. Drawn from interviews with real stepkids, the authors help young readers identify and deal with their feelings and learn strategies for coping, while keeping a positive outlook that this, too, can be not only dealt with—but maybe even have some positive outcomes.”—Harriet Heath, Ph.D. Director, The Parent Center, Child Study Institute and Thorne School, Bryn Mawr College

“The Step-Tween Survival Guide perfectly describes the feelings and experiences that children handle as a result of blended families. Includes hands-on exercises, heartfelt wisdom, and much needed humor. It's a must-have for every stepfamily wanting to create a sense of warmth, open communication and love for their children.”—Roni Leiderman, Ph.D., Dean, Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies, Nova Southeastern University

“A must-read for anyone with teens in their stepfamily! Finally, someone has addressed these important members of the stepfamily.”—Jeannette Lofas, President, Stepfamily Foundation

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Just as the title indicates, this book is intended to help children between nine and twelve cope with life as part of two families. Wisely, the introduction informs readers that they should not expect to find everything contained in the book helpful or sufficient to solve all their difficulties. Included are interviews with real kids about their situations, and they should reassure those who make use of this title. Practical tips and tools provide sensible ways for coping. Chapters include information about talking with adults and stepsiblings, rules in different households, and finding help when needed. Short quizzes aid in assessing problems and teach readers more about different personalities. A bibliography includes five additional titles that contain more information. There are also two web sites that should prove useful. Written in a straightforward style, this volume needs to be made available for boys and girls who find themselves in these circumstances. The authors state: "Currently, around 4.5 million stepkids under age 18 live in the United States," so there is a definite need for this title. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
