Daniel Defoe (1660 - 24 April 1731),born Daniel Foe, was an English trader, writer, journalist, pamphleteer, and spy, most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularise the form in Britain and with others such as Samuel Richardson, and thus is among the founders of the English novel. He was a prolific and versatile writer, producing more than five hundred books, pamphlets, and journals on various topics, including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology, and the supernatural. He was also a pioneer of economic journalism.

Daniel Defoe (1660–1731) was an English author best known for his adventure novel, Robinson Crusoe, that he wrote later in life. A prolific writer, Defoe authored several books on economics, history, biography and crime. He pursued a variety of careers including merchant, soldier, secret agent and political pamphleteer, but is best remembered for his fiction. Daniel Defoe's other widely read books include Roxana, Moll Flanders and A Journal of the Plague Year. The name of the Robinson Crusoe Island, located in the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile, was inspired by Defoe's famous story.
