Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Kids might know what Chanukah is but they may not know some of the background. The Jews were happy and worshiped freely in their temples until King Antiochus of Syria decided to attack and enslave the people and desecrate the temples. A priest named Mattathias and his sons escaped and were joined by others. They fought skirmishes with the Syrians for many years. Finally Judah "the Maccabee" (The Hammer) was appointed to lead the resistance. He succeeded, and when he recaptured the temple in Jerusalem, he only had enough pure oil to last a day to keep a flame representing God's eternal light burning. But while he waited for more oil, a miracle happened, and the flame continued to burn for eight days. Today, Jews around the world celebrate this miracle of light and the right to worship freely. It is a lot of information to pack into a board book and is really more appropriate for kids who are usually beyond that format. 2002, CandyCane Press/Ideals Publications,
