Many are aware that Mark Zuckerberg, while a student at Harvard in 2004, founded the world famous website Facebook. The site was originally designed as a social network just for students at Harvard, but it spread rapidly to faculty, staff, and even graduates of the university. Zukerberg needed funds and technical aid so he quickly enlisted two fellow students Eudardo Saverin and Dustin Moskovitz as partners. By fall of 2004, Zukerberg and Moskovitz secured additional funding, set up an office in Palo Alto, California, and decided not to return to Harvard. Rapid growth, new features, more and more users, legal troubles, invasion of privacy issues, and failures such as Beacon are portrayed candidly and precisely. The company remains committed to the founder's goal, " ...never just to create a company...(but to) build something that actually makes a big difference in the world." An index, bibliography, and glossary provide additional information. Attractive color photos are a worthwhile addition. One defect is the switching between many type sizes and colors. Small gold print on glossy black pages is especially hard to read. Many other titles in this series, "Built for Success," are currently in print. Sarah Gilbert selected some of the hottest business topics for today’s youth in her newest additions to the sixteen-title, nonfiction series, Built for Success. Each book in this bright, visually appealing series takes one world-renowned corporation and documents its history, starting with the idea people who were determined to see their vision come to light. The books follow the same simple format: five chapters, all ending with a short section that features an interesting story behind the company, a glossary, a selected bibliography, and an index. The chapters are written in an engaging narrative style. In The Story Of Facebook, Gilbert does an excellent job of balancing the view of Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder, with the voices of his critics. Zuckerberg claims that he set out to “build something that actually makes a big change in the world,” while his critics claim he betrays the privacy of his users for financial gain. The sections at the end of the chapters are also informative. One section explains how President Obama hired one Facebook founder to help him use social media in the 2008 election. The subject of business is often a dry one, yet Gilbert provides engaging narratives. The four newest books in the Built for Success series keep to the same consistency of topic, style, and presentation of the earlier works. The books avoid the popular, but misleading, “rags to riches” overtone that usually accompanies business stories. Some readers will struggle with the narrative approach to the books, preferring titles that break up the chapters into smaller chunks for easier skimming; however, the bright, well-chosen photos, appropriate length, and captivating narrative will attract students and teachers in business, consumer economics, and current world issues classes. Gr 5–9—Solid resources for students needing information for reports or just curious about how successful businesses are built. Gilbert imparts succinct and informative details within the pages of these slim volumes. Both titles begin with a brief introduction about the early days of creating the company, then present significant steps in its growth and progress in chronological order. In Amazon, the author recounts how Jeff Bezos started with his business idea, his entrepreneurial spirit, and a move to Seattle to begin his company. Its fast growth, coupled with the desire to provide attractive features for customers, led to struggling financial stability. The introduction of the Kindle helped drive Amazon's success. In Facebook, readers see how Mark Zuckerberg, a computer whiz at Harvard, took his skill and hobby of computer programming coupled with an idea for networking students on campus to arrive at the early development of Facebook. Chapters include the challenges of running and maintaining his growing business and finding investors. Though following different trajectories, both histories relate similar paths in terms of struggles, setbacks, successes, and growth, with similar formatting, high-quality glossy photos.Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE
