Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver
This is a very cool browsing book filled with information on all kinds of inventions. The book covers several topics in a timeline format, including air travel, food, household inventions, and medicine. Information is given in short, humorous sections and in even shorter sidebars. Every piece of information comes with its own cartoon-like illustration that helps to tell the story. This book could be read straight through, but it is more likely to be used as a browsing book. While not containing enough in-depth information for a report, it is an excellent starting point for finding ideas for research topics. Larkum's sometimes very small illustrations are appealing and serve to convey a great deal of information on their own. If you have room in your collection, this would be a nice choice for readers interested in inventions, as well as for nonfiction and reluctant readers. Includes a table of contents, a timeline, a glossary, and a very thorough index. Readers are also encouraged to visit the Osborne web site for more information and links to invention-related web sites.
