Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Young
Like other works in the "Hip-Hop Hitmakers" series, this book focuses more on the life of the recording studio's founder and artists than the company in the title. Mintzer describes how the company came into being, and then established itself as an independent label for hip-hop artists and rappers. So So Def was founded by Jermaine Dupri, who began his entertainment career as a dancer. In that career, he made several significant connections that later proved fortuitous for him in the music industry. A millionaire before he was twenty years old, he crafted his own record label and successfully produced young talent he discovered. Moving up the music industry ladder, Dupri became vice president of Arista Records, bringing his label with him. His intent was to bring youth, creativity, and edgier music to Arista. Not one to let the grass grow under his executive shoes, Dupri later moved on to Virgin Records. This allowed him to make even more creative changes, with the hopes to bring a more youthful audience to Virgin. Another move two years later to another label was followed by final dissolution with a larger company and becoming independent a couple of years after. Throughout his career, Jermaine Dupri was fortunate to work with talented musicians, including Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson. He left the benefits of his creative genius on several record labels, spreading hip-hop and rap music farther across both the country and the world. Mintzer's research is very thorough but readable, and the book is sure to hold the attention of anyone even vaguely familiar with this genre and its artists. Colorful photographs enhance the text and provide well-placed diversions in each chapter. A helpful and detailed chronology follows the text, as does a clear glossary, a list of suggested readings and a detailed index. This is a great addition to any school or public library.
