Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This is a big, beautiful book filled with spectacular illustrations and expert narratives on the American West from prehistory to the late 20th century. Editor Utley (Cavalier in Buckskin; Lone Star Justice) has impeccable credentials, and one of his great successes here is the total integration of text and pictures, providing great visual interest for the general public and scholars alike. Extensive use is made of excellent sidebar features (e.g., on Native American languages, Yellowstone, and California Joe) that stand apart from the main text, almost overpowering the strong main narrative. Despite the publisher's claim that this is "the only book to recount the complete history of the Western States," there have been many serious single-volume attempts, perhaps most notably The Oxford History of the American West, edited by Clyde A. Milner II and others, which features a good deal more text though fewer illustrations. Nevertheless, public and school libraries will find Utley's compendium a sophisticated and attractive overview of U.S. history, and many college libraries will find it appropriate as well. Highly recommended.-Nathan E. Bender, Buffalo Bill Historical Ctr., Cody, WY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
