Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dawna Lisa Buchanan
This set of forty richly illustrated cards would make a nice gift for "bookish" children who enjoy stories, and might invite reluctant writers to come up with stories of their own. The glossy pictures contain iconic and folk lore images, such as The King, The Queen and The Keeper of Dreams. Reminiscent of tarot cards, but packed (instead) with fairytale and fable references, the cards also feature prompts on the back of each. For example, the questions for the card titled "The Door to Faeryland" ask "Where does the door lead you? Who is looking through the tree roots? What do the trees whisper?" These encourage viewers to look more closely at the detailed pictures, rendered in pastel colors with frames that suggest a stone hall, arch or doorway. A small pamphlet accompanies the package, with suggestions for games and activities that can be used independently or in small groups, as well as ideas for creating written, oral and/or visual stories based on the viewers' interests. The set comes packed in a sturdy box with a lift-off cover and a plastic window that holds the cards. Reviewer: Dawna Lisa Buchanan
