Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patricia Timbrook
Lizzie, a small field mouse, believes she is strong enough to wrestle bear and win. But, neither hedgehog, mole, fox, badger, deer, nor squirrel believes Lizzie's claim. Soon, she is challenged by Albert the Bear to prove her strength. Lizzie accepts. All her animal friends gather to watch. To her surprise, Lizzie wins. But, then, the real twist comes when everyone, including Albert, yells, "Happy Birthday, Lizzie!" instead of "Yea, Lizzie is stronger than bear!" Lizzie discovers to her embarrassment that Albert had let her win and that she is not after all the strongest mouse in the world. However, she also realizes it's good to have friends. Spot-illustrated in earthy browns, yellows, grays and reds, this oversized cartoon-style picture book convey a lively tone to an interesting group of characters.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2A tiny mouse named Lizzie awakes from a quixotic dream and decides she's the "strongest animal in the woods." Armed with her delusions of grandeur, she brags about her abilities to the other forest creatures-refusing to even test her strength against the less mighty animals. She heads straight off to challenge Albert the bear. Setting aside the bit of fear rising inside of her, Lizzie defeats him handily. During her post-Goliath reverie, the spectators shout "Happy Birthday Lizzie!" At that point, she realizes that Albert let her win, and a woodland party ensues. While the colorful, watercolor-washed illustrations capture the expressions of the creatures nicely, they can not save the flat story. The plodding text lacks pacing, logic, or tension and ends too abruptly. A weak offering indeed.Christy Norris Blanchette, Valley Cottage Library, NY
