Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Andrea Bocelli and the Three Tenors may receive more hype, but discerning operaphiles are likely to favor Carlo Bergonzi, whose elegant style and musical intelligence more than makes up for any lack of flashiness. This generous 154-minute, two-disc tribute offers an overview of one of the most distinguished operatic careers of the late 20th century. From the classic 1958 recording of La Bohème with Tebaldi and Bastianini under Serafin to Otello's aria "Dio! Mi potevi scagliar" from a 1975 recital album, this compilation is jam-packed with goodies -- and not just arias. This generous 154-minute, two-disc tribute offers an overview of one of the most distinguished operatic careers of the late 20th century. Mi potevi scagliar" from a 1975 recital album, this compilation is jam-packed with goodies -- and not just arias. The Sublime Voice shows Bergonzi in a range of settings: love duets from Madama Butterfly again with Tebaldi and Un ballo in maschera with Nilsson, the famous quartet from Rigoletto with Scotto, Cossotto, and Fischer-Dieskau, and part of the final scene from La Traviata with Sutherland. Some of the selections are subjected to sudden fade-outs, which can be frustrating, although one can always turn to the complete recordings, most of which are readily available. Indeed, this set should inspire many folks to run out and buy more of the tenor's large discography. They won't be disappointed.

    A truly sublime voice

The singing is so beautiful. His handling of Verdi's works is quite extraordinary. If you like opera, you will listen to these cds over and over again. It is well worth owning. There is a nice mix of material including selections by Puccini, Verdi, etc.
