Overview

For the first time in print, the first in New York Times bestseller Tara Sue Me’s seductive and scandalous series that has enthralled millions…

Abby King has a secret fantasy.

New York knows Nathaniel West as the brilliant and handsome CEO of West Industries, but Abby knows he’s more: a sexy and skilled dominant who is looking for a new submissive. Yearning to experience a world of pleasure beyond her simple life as a librarian, Abby offers herself to Nathaniel to fulfill her most hidden desires.

After only one weekend with the Master, Abby knows she needs more, and fully submits to Nathaniel’s terms. But despite the pleasure he takes in Abby’s willing spirit, the Nathaniel hidden behind the rules remains cold and distant.

As Abby falls deeper into his tantalizing world of power and passion, she fears that Nathaniel’s heart may be beyond her reach—and that her own might be beyond saving.…

“I really enjoyed the heck of it.” ~Under the Covers

Another fan fiction/Fifty book you ask?

Yes…it is exactly that. Well, not exactly. Apparently, this is the book that E.L. James got some of her ideas from…that and Twilight. And while I didn’t really get a lot of Twilight from this book, you can definitely see the things that E.L. James picked out of it. As far as it being a fan fiction, the only clue I had was the lack of the character’s physical descriptions.

That being said, I really enjoyed the heck of it. I’m not sure what’s happened but this story line has not gotten old for me. Each story seems to have enough differences to keep me entertained…and entertained I was.

For me, this story seemed to deal more with the BDSM side of things. Right from the start, Abigail (Abby) is going in for an interview with Nathaniel to be his submissive. She has had a “thing” for him since he had a hand in helping save her Mother’s house. The problem is that she has no experience being a sub and Nathaniel doesn’t train submissives but he decides to make an exception in her case.

There’s a contract to sign, medical forms to fill out, exercise programs to follow as well as eating and sleeping requirements and BAM, come Friday at 6 pm it’s time for the festivities. Nathaniel has a couple of rules…he doesn’t do kissing and his subs do not spend the night in his bed. That really didn’t bother me too much except he had Abby sleep on a pallet on his bedroom floor sometimes and I didn’t really care for that. I wish I could say she didn’t either but while she wasn’t happy about it, she was happy to fulfill her submissive role…whatever Mr. West wanted. I don’t know a whole lot about BDSM but it seemed like this was very light. There was only one instance where I felt things went a bit far.

Abby was easy to like. Even though she’s a librarian, she’s not shy or hesitant and she knows what she wants and that’s Nathaniel anyway she can get him.

Nathaniel on the other hand is a bit cold. You can tell there is something going on there and slowly, things start to add up from the little pieces of information we get from his friends. It’s a great little twist!

The cast of characters are really enjoyable and they are the ones that help shed some light for Abby and maybe give her a bit too much of a push into thinking this arrangement could actually be a relationship. Nathaniel’s dog, Apollo, also plays a big part and you can’t help but love him.

One of the main differences of this story is Abby and Nathaniel’s love of books especially poetry. I love the little game they play with trying to figure out who said what. But my most favorite thing was when Nathaniel visited Abby at her work and left her a rose…a cream colored rose with rose tipped petals. Her coworker explained what the rose meant from a poem:

“The red rose whispers of passion,
    And the white rose breathes of love;
O the red rose is a falcon,
And the white rose is a dove.
    But I send you a cream-white rosebud
    With a flush on its petal tips;

For the love that is purest and sweetest
Has a kiss of desire on the lips.”

There’s some pretty steamy scenes, some are pretty straight up BDSM but others are a bit more daring and romantic. There’s one at the Super Bowl and at the piano that are muy caliente!

There definitely is drama and we get a good amount of it! For every little crack that Abby puts in Nathaniel’s tough facade, Nathaniel builds it back up “brick by brick.” It’s extremely frustrating!

The ending sets things up nicely for the next book called The Dominant which sounds like it will be from Nathaniel’s POV or at least part of it. I am sooo looking forward to that!

    Favorite quotes:

♥ “Thank you for escorting me on my tour of the Rare Books Collection.”

♥ “You think it’s different for me?”

♥ “You’re still mine. Even with this off.”

♥ “Now that,” he said against my neck, “was an amazing half-time show.”

    ♥ “Turpentine.”

♥ “You were the goddess I longed to worship. My unobtainable dream. The relationship I could never hope to have.”

As someone who lives the life style 24/7. I really enjoyed this book. The examples of a true dominant submissive relationship were so on. This is what the relationship is about.

This is Abby's first forray into BDSM and submission.  She did her research and ended up in the office of Nathaniel West.  Abby's had no training and has no references.  Based on her behavior in his office at their first meeting, Nathaniel suggests a weekend trial.  Abby agrees and so begins their "arrangement".  Abby did tend to get a little whiney inside her own thoughts in her head (never spoken aloud) now and then, but most of the time it was understandable based on Nathaniel's actions.  Nathaniel stated that he wanted nothing more than a submissive and told Abby not to expect or want anything more from him.  I enjoyed watching Nathaniel fall in love and his refusal to see/admit it and attempt to remain in denial as his actions clearly gave him away.  I like the fact that Abby had experiences with other men previously that left her searching out what she truly needed in order to be sexually satisfied and fulfilled in general.  I love the fact that Abby is not weak and timid - even though she does come across as such until she has gets close to her breaking point and stands up for herself.  Nathaniel does eventually declare his love for Abby and cofesses the feeling he's had for her since he first saw her.  They end up dating a bit and negotiate how they are going to navigate the dating relationship and the D/s relationship as they want and need both.  I enjoyed this book so much despite the fact that the D/s play was a bit light.  Nathaniel does tell her in the end that things are going to get more intense as she is going to find out what true play is in a D/s relationship with him.  I can't even begin to tell you how much I'm looking forward to reading The Dominant and (hopefully) watching both sides of their relationship grow.

Abby knows that Nathaniel talked the bank out of foreclosing on

Abby knows that Nathaniel talked the bank out of foreclosing on her mother’s house and has followed him since. When she has the opportunity to enter his life she does, as his submissive in Tara Sue Me’s THE SUBMISSIVE, book 1 of her The Submissive trilogy. Nathaniel does not train submissives but he cannot resist Abby because of the past. Both have feelings towards the other from the beginning. How does it work for them? Can they put those feelings aside to have a Dom/sub relationship? Will those feelings eclipse the Dom/sub relationship?
THE SUBMISSIVE is one wild ride. I love first person point-of-view because I become that character. Tara Sue Me did well. Never does her story leave Abby’s point-of-view. I only knew what Abby felt, thought, and conveyed in her conversations. I learned what others thought of her and Nathaniel together through their conversations with Abby. I loved being immersed in Abby.
Abby and Nathaniel were fantastic characters. Abby has no idea what is truly in store for her with Nathaniel. Watching her move out of her librarian world into his wealthy world fascinated me. She is not overly confident but she is able to hold her own in that world. When her best friend, Felicia, does not approve of her becoming Nathaniel’s submissive, she notes it but makes her own decision to do it. Abby’s confusion comes through when Nathaniel asks her questions in public. She wonders what answer he wants. Nathaniel is not always clear of how the two should interact in public. I could feel Abby’s hesitation when answering questions. I also loved that Abby learned to know Nathaniel in ways that few had. I learned about Nathaniel as Abby learned. When they came to an impasse she was strong enough to say enough and walk away with dignity. She was also able to eventually pick up the pieces of her life and get through the days that followed. Abby was truly a strong woman who knew what she wanted, how to get it, and when to say no. Excellent role model.
The secondary characters were excellent also. Most of them were Nathaniel’s family and friends. I was amazed at how quickly they took to Abby. Their reactions were based on how Nathaniel was changed by Abby. I would like to know these people. While non-judgmental, they stood up for what they believed and spoke their minds. I also liked that Felicia and Jackson, Nathaniel’s cousin, had their love story. Although it was smoother than Abby and Nathaniel’s.
Abby and Nathaniel’s relationship develops through their Dom/sub scenes. The sex is hot and plentiful. I liked that the BDSM was brought into the story and explained by Nathaniel to Abby, not just the how but the why. It was interesting and made it less fearful for her. I also liked how Nathaniel took his time with Abby and learned her and her body. I knew what Nathaniel could not say to her. I wish he would have let her know but that would have been too easy a story—probably too short a story, too.
I look forward to reading book 2 of the series, THE DOMINANT.

This was an ok book for me

I read The Submissive, I took the advice of the other reviews and skipped The Dominant and read The Training. This book starts out like Fifty Shades but has a different story line. I'm still a fan of Fifty Shades and I prefer it over this one. In the Submissive he makes her sleep on the floor like a dog. I thought that was very degrading.
There were other things too that turned me off of this book. Christian is a much better lover in my opinion.
