An injured fledgling crow literally dropped into our lives. As we reared him to adulthood he became a very real family member before his eventual return to the wild. As we had adopted him, he adopted us. Dog and all. Man, woman, beast and bird all living a most joyous summer's adventure. We shall always remember warmly that summer with Shadow.

About the Author

Pat Payne, born in St. Louis County, Missouri in 1933 and presently married to wife Dot for more than fifty years. With five adult children and four grandchildren, in addition to St. Louis have lived in Chicago, Milwaukee, Baton Rouge, San Diego, Houston and Oak Harbor, Washington while working in the construction industry.
Favorite pastimes would include fishing, old friends and music.

A simple, straightforward, yet magical story. Written in a very straightforward style that manages to capture perfectly the magic that happens when humans and crows get to know each other well.
"The Summer of Shadow" has lots of great pictures of Shadow the crow, his dog companion Murphy, and a few of his human friends. The book is good reading for adults and would be a particularly good read for youngsters who are in the process of discovering the magic of the natural world.

Lovely color snapshots of the family member's action and growth contribute to an outstanding story perfect for grades 3-5.
