Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved stories were originally written for older children and have been enjoyed by generations of readers. This new series takes the main ideas of the original books and adapts them into picture book style for young children to enjoy. This first book tells the story of Laura's early life one summer as she was growing up in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. The children learn much about surviving in the wilderness by helping their parents with farming, cooking, cleaning, and collecting honey.1996, HarperCollins, Ages 4 to 8, $11.95, $11.89 and $3.95. PreS-Gr 5-In gentle, poetic language, the beauty of sand dunes and their role in protecting the beach from erosion is described as two children discover their unique pleasures. When a storm destroys the fragile dunes, the youngsters are saddened. The following winter, however, they take part in a conservation effort to help restore the dunes with recycled Christmas trees. Detailed watercolors portray the natural beauty of the seashore as well as the ravages of coastal storms, and convey the sensitivity of the story. Excellent for showing the delicate ecological balance of our planet, as well as a good read.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

All summer, a girl and her little brother play on the dunes and beach behind their grandfather's house, but one day, a violent storm washes the sand hills away. When the children and their parents return to Grandpa's after New Year's Day, they take their Christmas tree to the beach and line it up with others to catch the sand and form new dunes. Inspired by dune conservation practices used on Texas beaches, this simple picture book highlights the pleasure these children take in the environment and in helping to preserve a place they love. Somewhat crowded but still effective, the impressionistic watercolor illustrations show the beach as ecosystem rather than playground. An efficacious use of the picture-book genre; an author's note adds extra information about coastal sand dunes.
