Overview

The defining moments of young Ethan Opochensky's life occurred during the summer he spent with his cousin Alice in the small, rural town of Meddersville. Three children disappeared that summer, his cousin among them. Nine-year-old Ethan believes he knows the killer, but his story is so fanciful, it is dismissed out of hand.

Twenty-five years later, children are once again disappearing in Meddersville. Ethan returns to Meddersville to separate fact from childish fantasy, to discover the truth behind Alice's disappearance, and to bring her killer to justice.

The Summer We Lost Alice is a story of loss and grief, of courage, of family, and ultimately, of healing and the triumph of an enduring spirit.

Full length novel. Contains paranormal elements, a trace of mild language, no explicit sex.

Hands down, one of my most favorite reads this year. The Summer We Lost Alice is everything I love in a book- mystery, depth of characters and plot, a hint of the paranormal, and a solid ending. I love, absolutely love, getting to the end of a book and feeling hope in my own self that has translated so clearly from the hope felt by the author's pen for these characters.

Meet the Author

Jan Strnad contracted the writing bug as an adolescent when he typed out the short story, "The Available Data on the Worp Reaction" by Lion Miller. Looking at the typewritten pages, he thought, "I can do this!" and determined that, when the time came, he would make his living as a writer.

He began his professional career by writing comics, then moved from his home town of Wichita, Kansas, to Los Angeles where he became a staff writer for Disney Television Animation. He worked for most of the Hollywood studios, including Sony/Columbia, Warner Bros., Universal, MGM and others before turning his attention to becoming a novelist.

His first published novel was "Risen," a supernatural thriller, now out of print, which has been resurrected as an ebook. With his second novel, "The Summer We Lost Alice," he went directly to self-publishing.

He is a lover of dogs, estimating that a hundred or more dogs have passed through his household, most of them as fosters awaiting adoption. He has an inexplicable fondness for 1950s science fiction movies and is fascinated by the workings and failings of the human brain.

This is a must read for those who enjoy mystery and suspense with an overlay of the supernatural. It is the first book of Strnad's I have read and I could not put it down. Imagine me at 3:00 AM promising myself just one more page time after time - only to finish the book as the sky welcomes the dawn.

I really enjoyed this book.  It kept me entertained and wondering what was going to happen next.  I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. This book would make a great movie. The author had the right combination of characters human and canine. It is a roller coaster ride of the unexpected. I would love to read a sequel.

Cannot describe how absolutely cool this book was! So many unexpected moments...at the top of the roller coaster one minute, and suddenly there's a sharp turn, or a plunge. This was one I didn't want to put down, but was both relieved and sad when I turned the last page. Really good story! Review by CherishD

Loved the beginning and was ready for a good "who-done-it". The story tanked when it went from the summer alice was taken to present day. Huge disappointment. My advice- don't waste your time or money on this one.

The blurb sounded intruiging, so I bought it for my Nook, not realizing it was a paranormal theme. Just not what I was expecting at all, very strange.

I was very unsure as to whether I wanted to read this book. The idea of missing children nearly put me off. I'm so glad I did read it. The 'good' characters were excellently written...and the 'bad' ones were as well, since they really kept me guessing! Thank you for the excellent book...but thank you especially for Boo. I'll miss him!

This book was exciting and hard to put down. However I was disappointed when a third of the way through I discovered it was about witchcraft and what I think is called paranormal or supernatural. But if you want a quick, easy and fun to read this would do.

A poignant look back at childhood and bonding relationships. Quick turns will take you down unexpected roads, but the outcome is worth the trip.

Loved the book. i could not put it down.. even in parts where i found myself rolling my eyes at heather and what she was claiming (dont want to spoil it). I read the book so fast.. i kept wanting to know if my suspicions were correct and what was going to happen next
