All Music Guide - Steve Leggett
Carl Perkins was a good guitar player, although he never flaunted it, and he was a good country and rockabilly singer too, although he never flaunted that either, and he was a darn good and innovative songwriter at a time when the roots of rock & roll and modern country were just coming together -- he not only wrote "Blue Suede Shoes," but he also wrote "Daddy Sang Bass" for Johnny Cash, "I Was So Wrong" for Patsy Cline, and "Let Me Tell You About Love" for the Judds, for instance, and Perkins sides like "Matchbox," "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby," "Dixie Fried," and "Boppin' the Blues" have influenced countless guitar players and singers, from George Harrison to Brian Setzer. This five-disc set collects unissued sides and studio outtakes from Perkins' classic sessions at Sam Phillips' Sun Studio in the mid- to late '50s when he was turning out these songs, and adds home recordings from the same era, all of which makes this an extremely valuable historical and archival collection, the closest thing to being a fly on the wall during one of the most important stretches in rock & roll history. Perkins didn't exactly become super famous, but there's no denying his songs did. Here's how they were put together.
