Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The one star that is visible during the day is the sun. It is a ball of hot glowing gases that provide heat and light to our solar system. Our sun is a yellow dwarf star and it is also categorized as medium bright. An illustration shows the various layers that make up the sun. On the outer layer there are dark areas called sunspots. When they flare up they can interfere with communications because of the intense electromagnetic signal they emanate. The sun is at the center of our solar system and all the planets orbit the sun. It is a force called gravity that keeps all the planets in their places. There would be no life on earth without the sun which provides heat and light. Because the earth rotates as it orbits the sun, we have day and night and each rotation constitutes a day. So while it appears that the sun is rising and setting, it is really the movement of the earth that creates this phenomena. The position of the Earth, which is tilted during its rotation around the sun, also determines the seasons. Readers are offered an activity to determine where the sun goes at night. The closing pages reference web sites, and provide a glossary and an index to this very brief introduction to the stars. Excellent, full color photographs appear on every page and the experiment will reinforce the concept presented. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
