Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
One morning the Sun refuses to rise. He is angry because the Moon eclipsed him, so he leaves her to work forever. The gardener and his son are worried, while a small poppy fears death from the dark and cold. A magic pixie named Rainbow, however, "paints" everything purple, then green, then orange, showing the Sun, Moon and Universe the wonder of colors. The Moon apologizes to the Sun, who accepts the apology and shines brightly, lighting the Universe. Somehow, the Poppy disappears and a little polka-dotted turtle appears "out of nowhere." This strange, disjointed story serves as a vehicle for exotic illustrations that depict the several participants isolated from each other on large expanses of heavy white paper. Wide colored borders and matching colored typeface create a sense of order, of coherence, for these symbols that seem to be made of sketchily applied pastels. The thick-toothed pages contribute significantly to the overall esthetic impact and feeling of importance. 2001 (orig. 1999), Harry N. Abrams, $15.95. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz

Sun, the Moon, and the Gardener's Son

This was a good read! I really liked it. Translated from French, it is not your typical American story.

A reader from New York, NY

A charming story about patience and working together. My daughters love to hear it over and over again. They especially love the drawings. For the multi-lingual family, this book is also available in French.
