Children's Literature
A family decides to leave their home and trek West in a covered wagon. We travel with them in a wagon train, apprehensive of hostile Indians, through drought and mud, in awe of the sea of buffalo, past graves in the desert, finally alone until they reach their goal. They build their home, plant the precious seeds the mother has managed to preserve, and are finally "at rest." The overarching poetic tone of the text is matched by Lewin in his double-page naturalistic watercolors. From the star-dotted deep blue front end-papers to the burning red-orange back pages he uses colors to enhance the emotions. Bright at first departure, they darken as the going toughens, with a glow when they finally arrive. A note on the wagon trip West is included. 2002, G.P.
