Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A family decides to leave their home and trek West in a covered wagon. We travel with them in a wagon train, apprehensive of hostile Indians, through drought and mud, in awe of the sea of buffalo, past graves in the desert, finally alone until they reach their goal. They build their home, plant the precious seeds the mother has managed to preserve, and are finally "at rest." The overarching poetic tone of the text is matched by Lewin in his double-page naturalistic watercolors. From the star-dotted deep blue front end-papers to the burning red-orange back pages he uses colors to enhance the emotions. Bright at first departure, they darken as the going toughens, with a glow when they finally arrive. A note on the wagon trip West is included. 2002, G.P. Putnam's Sons/Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers,

K-Gr 3-The westward movement is depicted via narrative and luminous watercolors. The patriarch of a New England family yearns to "know the endless prairie" and "The Sierra with snow." Husband, wife, and three children sadly bid adieu to their familiar surroundings while they experience the excitement of the impending adventure. Their covered wagon travels with others and then alone, though they are never without the companionship of wildlife; at times, there is the presence and sometimes the assistance of Native Americans. The impressive panoramas of prairie and mountain vistas are well served by Lewin's majestic, detailed paintings. Death, inclement weather, and other hardships of pioneer travel are alluded to, but the family arrives in California relatively unscathed. A graceful telling, amplified by an arresting visual narrative.-Rosalyn Pierini, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, CA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
The travels of a family from Maine are chronicled in the sights, smells, and sounds of their wagon journey. At first, Pa is the one with the urge to move west, a longing to see the Sierras and the prairie. But his longing gradually infects the whole family with new dreams as they experience the trail. Buffalo, wolves, Indians, other travelers, and the creak of the wagon and its contents are their constant companions . . . along with the new stars in the sky. With the new wonders also come new hardships-lack of rain, and then too much of it, the deaths of animals and newfound friends, and the giving up of precious possessions. The tears constantly mix with the hopes and dreams. But as the sun sets over the Sierras for the first time, the family knows it has reached home. Johnston (That Summer, p. 571, etc.) fills her characteristically fluid text with the sights and sounds the family was likely to encounter on their journey-things of interest to young readers. The trials and celebrations of the family can seem almost too extreme at times, with the wild swings from good to bad occurring only sentences apart. But each description feels comfortably right. Lewin's (Big Jimmy's Kum Kau: Chinese Take Out, 2001, etc.) stunning watercolors put the reader right on the prairie with the characters, making the experience real. His characters and scenery are infused with life and vividly portray the setting. A richly rewarding journey. (Picture book. 5-8)

GLOWING ILLUSTRATIONS ADD LUSTER TO THIS STORY

Tony Johnston opens his saga of a pioneer family trekking westward with an apt quotation from Louis L'Amour's 'The Quick and the Dead,' 'Many have died, Suzanna, but more will come. There are always people who hope, who wish, who dream.' Hope, wish and dream is precisely what this family does as they reluctantly say farewell to the familiar in New Hampshire, and set out for the unknown. As explained in a reader's note, it would take a family a full month to travel by covered wagon from New England to Missouri, the spot where wagon trains set out for the West. Their journey would begin in mid-May after the worst of winter and when prairie grass had grown tall enough to feed their livestock. If good fortune shone on them their entire trip would last six or seven months. One had to be hardy to endure such a passage. They took only their necessities and a few items that they loved. Joyful times occurred when they joined other families around an evening campfire. Danger lay in wait for them with wild animals and Indians. A broken wheel was a disaster; death a companion. Still they soldiered on until at last they reached the land of their dreams. Ted Lewin's glowing full-page illustrations add a luster to this story of our forefathers.
