Editorial Reviews

Voya Reviews, April 2014 (Vol. 36, No. 1) - Ellen Frank
The third edition of the Supreme Court Justices is an excellent comprehensive overview of the Supreme Court justices from 1789 until 2012. The new edition profiles of John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan. There are many political cartoons, portraits, paintings, and photographs to complement the biographies. Each bio discusses the justice’s early home life, parents and siblings, education, judicial career, and important decisions. There are descriptive anecdotes about the justices which readers will find interesting. Justice Minton, who held one of the four votes needed to uphold the Brown v. Board of Education case, is described as “naturally salty.” The photographs will spark interest and discussion. One photograph of Fortas, who was close friends with President Lyndon Johnson, shows Johnson towering over Fortas, giving Fortas the “Johnson treatment” (434). There is a very complete index and a comprehensive bibliography. Included in the new edition is a bibliography of books about the justices for younger readers. The authors highlight relevant information about the justices relating to the cases they wrote and there are interesting anecdotes about the interplay among justices that a general, encyclopedic biography would not contain. The information is presented in a lively, readable format and this title is a highly recommend purchase as a ready-reference for both teens and adults. Reviewer: Ellen Frank; Ages adult professional.

Unlike congressional biographical reference sources, which need to be updated every two years, reference books on the Supreme Court justices, who are tenured for life, require less frequent updates. The last edition of this work was published in 1995; Cushman (Supreme Court Historical Soc.), who edited the previous volume, here provides profiles of the most recent members of the court and revised bibliographies and charts of congressional confirmations and appointments. Arranged chronologically by date of appointment, the entries, which each average about four to five pages in length, contain a biographical portrait, a discussion of the major cases heard during the justice's term, and interesting anecdotal material on their families, interests, and hobbies. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations enhance the work; a keyword index provides easy access to the text. VERDICT A superb ready-reference source and the most up-to-date one available on the topic. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.—Donald Altschiller, Boston Univ. Lib.
