The story begins with the family stuck on a ship that became grounded during a terrible storm. The ship cleaved between some rocks, broke in half and all the sailors on board quickly abandoned ship forgetting about and leaving the Swiss family Robinson behind on board the part of the ship that was stuck fast above the waterline between the rocks.

This is the perfect book to read to young children just before bed. A chapter a night would present a charming bedtime tale for about two months.
