In the Rion there are Nine Realms, created by the powerful Sylphs who vanished long ago. The Empire they helped shape has subsided, and men now live isolated and estranged in what they call the After Days. But the magical Songs forged by the Sylphs still exist. Some are common and known by all, while others are dangerous and mysterious, like the Black Songs. Intent on finding a Song that can win back the lovely Symna, Jono leaves the riverside town of Galn to search the distant Realms. When he returns, he brings her a mystical music box that can play for her the Sylvan Song and reveal her personal destiny. When Symna opens the music box, however, the results surprise them both, and they are thrust into an adventure that will take them from their sleepy town to the most distant of Realms, where they learn the truth about the Sylphs, and why they disappeared so long ago.
