Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-In both titles, the author shows how these buildings have survived centuries of neglect, natural disasters, and wars, largely because of the genius and talent of their architects and builders. The first chapters provide background information and facts about the initiation of the projects. The major portions of text describe the methods of construction and innovative features. The last chapters offer a history of the decline of the structures and their condition in modern times. The texts are enriched with interesting sidebars, diagrams that clarify the description of the building techniques, and many color photographs and reproductions. The lack of glossaries to explain the many architectural terms is a minor flaw. These titles offer more historical background and are designed for an older audience than the "Great Buildings" series (Raintree). Worthwhile additions to enhance history and architectural collections.-Elizabeth Stumpf, Clearfield Middle School, PA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
