All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger
With a lineup that includes such British folk heavies as Peter Bellamy, Robin Dransfield, and Eddie Upton, it's hard not to hold Free Reed's The Tale of Ale: The Story of the Englishman and His Beer up to some of the genre's other great alcohol-inspired collections like A.L. Lloyd's English Drinking Songs and the Clancy Brothers' Come Fill Your Glass with Us. This collection of songs and stories about "the English and their beer" from folklorist Vic Gammon was originally released in 1977. This 2007 reissue includes the remastered double LP in its entirety, as well as all of the original song-by-song liner notes.
