For all that the Taming of Mei Lin is a historical, I felt like I was in a time machine, whipped back to Old World China in the heat of the summer. The imagery Jeannie Lin creates through sight, smell and emotion felt as real as being there. Mei Lin is the feisty heroine who foolishly countered a marriage proposal with a combat challenge. Only the man who can defeat her will marry her, and many have fallen to her small, but expertly wielded, swords. The story begins with another challenge by the honorable, but poor, Shen Leung. From the first chapter, when Mei Lin realizes she can lose and accept the handsome warrior as a mate, or win and stay in the small town alone, I had no idea where the story would take me. Because the book is only five chapters long, all riveting, I loathe giving away even the outcome of this excellently told swordfight. This book is the love story of the ancestors of Ai Li, the heroine of Butterfly Swords. If Ms. Lin's first novel is as good as her first novella, the world has a new historical genre to look forward to. The Taming of Mei Lin can be read during the lunch hour, and, oh, what a lunch it will be! I hope you'll be able to return to your not-near-as-exciting job.

This short novella was just adorable. I loved the way it left everything open to the imagination without cluttering it up with too many details. This is a cute read.
