Meet the Author

C. Alexander Simpkins, PhD, and Annellen M. Simpkins, PhD, are psychologists specializing in meditation, hypnotherapy, and neuroscience. The Simpkins are authors of twenty-seven books, including a number of titles on Taoism: Simple Taoism, Tao in Ten, and most recently, The Dao of Neuroscience. They also have authored many books on the therapeutic application of meditation, including Zen Meditation in Psychotherapy, Meditation and Yoga in Psychotherapy, and Meditation for Therapists and Their Clients. In addition, they have a newly released book on neuroscience, Neuroscience for Clinicians. Their books have been published in more than twenty foreign editions and have won many awards.

The Simpkins regularly present seminars on meditation, hypnosis, and neuroscience worldwide to professionals and the public, and have performed research on therapeutic effectiveness using unconscious methods. Currently, the Simpkins are engaged in research on the unconscious movement. They practice and teach their own martial art, Tae Chun Do, combining meditation with movement. They reside in San Diego, California.

    The Tao of Bipolar gave me a lot of information about moods and bipolar disorder, about what Western medicine knows about it along with some interesting background about how the modern views developed through time. But what makes this book especially powerful is how it showed me a new way to think about and work with my mood swings from the Eastern healing perspective of Tao and changes in energy. I also understand how the brain is altered by bipolar and why meditation can literally help my brain return to balance! I am practicing the meditations regularly and find that I am developing the ability to stabilize myself. The instructions are nice because they teach you a method, but once you get to know an exercise, it begins to sink in and become a part of you. Most importantly, this book told me that I shouldn't despair, that bipolar is not a hopeless condition.The book offered me hope and a clear path to follow to manage my moods, not just with drugs, but also with my own efforts through meditation and mindfulness. I highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with moods.
