The Tarot: The King, The Church and The Cards: The history and meaning of the Tarotby Anne Burton

There arose in the fourteenth century a system of moral and spiritual teachings, a system that was used as game and guide, a system that was steeped in the symbols and icons of Kings, courts, and art of Renaissance Europe, a symbolism so powerful that it continues to teach us today. This tool is the Tarot. Upon its creation in approximately 1350, Tarot was accepted by the church and adopted by monks to help them remember the moral code and grow in their spiritual lives. What was it that the contemplative brothers saw in the Tarot? What universal truths did they learn from the cards? What spiritual truths are held in the pictures and symbols? How do these truths correspond to the Scriptures? Why did both King and Church later denounce the cards? Now, for the first time, the connection between the Tarot, the King, and fourteenth century monks is re-established and the wisdom of the Scriptures is revealed within the Tarot as it was in the brotherhood.
Contained in this work are the history, meaning, and use of the Tarot. Here, we re-establish the spiritual, Scriptural, and moral guidelines contained in the cards. The evolution of the cards from gaming to spiritual meditation, to daily lessons is explored. The history of Tarot will be discussed. How the cards became a parlor game and later a device of divination can be traced through social and religious change. Information and details on how to divine the past, present, and future will be shown as we explore the use of the cards in modern society. From the year 1300 to today, this book bridges the gap once and for all, bringing back to us the wisdom lost so long ago.
It is not the mind that moves the oracle. The Tarot kindly performs for both those amassed and bereft of the science, so called, of the mind. The oracle is moved by time itself. That thing, like the ocean tide, that ties all things, living and not, together into the dance and rhythm of synchronicity.
