Overview

His touch was electric.

His eyes were magnetic.

His lips were a temptation. . . .

But was he real?

Shane is near death after crashing her car on a long stretch of empty highway in rural New Mexico when she is miraculously saved by a mysterious young man who walks out of nowhere. She feels an instant energy between them, both a warmth that fills her soul and a tingle that makes her shiver. But who, or what, is he? For the first time in her life, she believes in the term "soul mates"—Travis is her destiny, and she is his. But she soon discovers that Travis is dead and strict rules govern kindred spirits of different dimensions. Even a kiss could destroy both their souls. And while Travis is almost impossible to resist, temptation proves to be the kindest enemy they encounter.

In this part romance, part supernatural thriller, true love discovers it may not be able to surpass all—especially the power of pure evil.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Deborah Cooper
Shane, a high school student and violin prodigy, crashes her car on a remote highway in the desert. She is bleeding and facing certain death when a handsome teenage boy, Travis, appears out of nowhere with the ability to heal her otherwise fatal wounds. The two are strongly attracted to each other, and Shane is undeterred even after discovering that Travis is actually dead. As a ghost in full human form, he has been allowed the chance to make up for past misdeeds. Travis believes that he and Shane are soul mates, or "Kindred," and that she can help redeem him. The two protagonists are challenged by dark forces and evil spirits from the Underworld who are connected to events from Travis's past. Valdes is a seasoned author of adult books and The Temptation is her first foray into YA fiction. Although it is disappointingly formulaic and the paranormal romance is basic in its telling, there are enough nuance and grit to keep teenaged readers entertained. As the story progresses, it grows ever darker, deepening the suspense. The plot is lifted by the character details and backstory with several unexpected twists that add layers of interest. Much is left unresolved, as one would expect for the first story in a trilogy, but whether or not the cliffhanger ending and relationship drama is strong enough to sustain readers' attention in the sequels remains to be seen. With clear echoes of the Twilight series, this book will appeal to teens looking for an easy, diverting read. Reviewer: Deborah Cooper

Gr 9 Up—The plot of this supernatural romance may seem a little too familiar to some readers. Mysterious boy rescues girl. She is irresistibly attracted to him; he feels likewise, but will not allow her to kiss him because it's too dangerous. And, finally, the girl makes poor decisions in order to be with him. Shane is driving to a violin concert when her car goes off the road in a deserted stretch of the New Mexico highway. She is saved and mysteriously healed by a handsome cowboy, Travis, who also protects her from coyotes. It turns out that he is a revenant who can heal and also become corporeal. Things really become complicated once Shane and Travis realize that Travis's enemy, a demon, is after her. The teens also come to understand that their attraction is something more powerful: they are Kindred, aka soul mates. Travis is stuck in limbo for something he did when he was alive, and when he saves Shane's life a second time, he is banished to the Underworld and she must now try to save him. As the first book in a trilogy, there are plenty of plotlines left dangling. With pedestrian writing that reads more like a TV script than a novel, a derivative plot, and minimal character development, this book is only for libraries that must have every supernatural romance that comes along.—Angela J. Reynolds, Annapolis Valley Regional Library, Bridgetown, NS, Canada

Readers who can't stomach full-blown love stories but enjoy action,
mystery, and the supernatural will find this book perfect! The main
character, Shane, will lead the reader right to the heart of the plot.
Shane was driving with her small dog early on in the book when an odd
coyote limped in front of her car. Shane jerks the wheel to avoid the
coyote and the car flips...leaving Shane near death and her small dog
nowhere to be found. Shane's saving grace comes in the form of Travis.
Travis has a remarkable ability to heal Shane and her small dog. The two
form a natural connection from here. The reader may wonder-what happened
to the coyote? The reader will be right to wonder... As Shane's and
Travis's relationship grows, the reader will begin to understand the
ramifications of any potential relationship between the two. It is
dangerous for Shane and Travis to love each other, but is love something
two people can ignore? Shane's character is great; she is intelligent
and courageous. However, she has her faults too-ignoring warnings and
continuing in her stubborn ways. Travis is every teenage girl's dream
boyfriend. He truly cares for Shane and is not embarrassed by his
feelings. He does everything in his power to keep Shane safe-even at his
own expense. The reader will learn to loathe the antagonists and root
for Shane and Travis. This book is exciting and a fun, fast read. The
ending will leave the reader wanting more, a wish he/she will be granted
as there will be a sequel! The authors' writing style is smooth and
edgy, the writing style will hold the readers' attention. This book is
    recommended for young adult/teen readers.
